The school year is wrapping up and we are finally starting to get some warmer weather and are able to spend more time outside. As summertime approaches, there are so many wonderful things to look forward to. There are summer BBQs, trips to the beach and pool, vacations, carnivals, and 4th of July celebrations. While it is important to soak up these wonderful moments and enjoy them, you want to make sure that you are also keeping up with your oral hygiene routine.
You do not want to ruin your smile and cause damage to your teeth during the upcoming summer months, so here are some things to look out for and be aware of.
Hydration :
While many of us are looking forward to the warmer weather and being able to spend more time soaking up the sun, you want to make sure that you are staying hydrated. It is easy to get caught up in the moment and you can forget to drink enough water. Some people even skip drinking water and opt to go for energy drinks so they can stay active. Although energy drinks might give you that small energy boost, there are large amounts of sugars and citric acids in these drinks that are harmful to your teeth. Sugar and citric acid can cause damage to your enamel and this can lead to a variety of problems, including tooth sensitivity and cavities. If you still prefer to have an energy drink once in a while, make sure you rinse your mouth out with water afterwards, or if you are able to, go and brush your teeth.
Swimming :
Swimming during the summer is something that children and adults look forward to all year. Although adults know that you should not drink the chlorinated pool water, some children are either unaware of the dangers of drinking the water, or it is simply unavoidable to take in small amounts of pool water while they are swimming. Although chlorinated water is necessary in terms of keeping pools cleaner, chlorine is highly acidic and if your teeth are exposed to this chemical frequently, it can start to cause damage to your enamel. After you are done swimming, it is a good idea to rinse out your mouth with water, and have your children do so as well.
Something else to think about with swimming is the danger of running on the pool deck. It is very easy for someone to fall and suffer a mouth injury, in addition to suffering from other injuries as well.
Foods :
Summertime BBQs are also a very popular weekend activity and having ice cream and popsicles often seems like a great way to cool down. Although it is okay to indulge every once in a while, just remember to take care of your mouth after eating these sweet treats. Ice cream and popsicles are loaded with sugar, which is why you want to make sure you are brushing your teeth after eating them.
It is exciting that summer is finally approaching, as we are all excited to finally have some nicer weather. Just make sure that you do not forget about keeping up with your oral hygiene routine. Call and schedule a dental appointment if you have any concerns about your teeth.
